SOL Trol (Asphaltile/Gilsonite) is a naturally occurring solid hydrocarbon resin used as a high-performance additive in drilling fluid systems for fluid loss control, wellbore stabilization, and shale inhibition. Derived from natural gilsonite deposits, it is widely recognized for its excellent sealing capability and strong affinity for formation surfaces, making it highly effective in both water-based (WBM) and oil-based mud (OBM) systems.
When introduced into drilling fluids, Asphaltile softens slightly under downhole temperatures and forms a thin, flexible, and low-permeability film along the wellbore wall. This film effectively seals micro-fractures and pore spaces, reducing filtrate invasion and enhancing wellbore integrity. Its natural bonding characteristics also help strengthen weak formations and minimize sloughing or collapse in reactive shales. Designed for reliable performance, Asphaltile (Gilsonite) performs efficiently across a wide range of drilling environments, including offshore, extended reach drilling (ERD), and high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) wells.
